Winter is here, and freezing temperatures can cause significant damage to pools and water systems if precautions aren't taken. Whether your pool is full or drained, taking these simple steps can save you time, money, and frustration.
If Your Pool Has Water
Moving water doesn’t freeze, so maintaining flow is critical:
- Keep the Pump Running: Ensure your pool pump runs continuously during freezing weather. Adjust any Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to full flow.
- Remove Debris: Keep the pool clean of leaves and other debris that could block skimmers, drains, or inlets.
- Optimize Flow: Backwash your filter and maintain proper water levels to ensure optimal flow.
- Drain Non-Continuous Flow Lines: Pipes like backwash and heater lines should be drained or insulated.
- Booster Pumps: Drain these pumps and loosen filter basket lids to prevent freezing.
- Insulate Vulnerable Areas: Use heat strips, insulation, or blankets for pipes or pumps that cannot be drained.
If Your Pool is Drained
- Drain All Equipment: Empty all pipes, pumps, and other systems.
- Store Equipment Safely: Move controllers, chemical pumps, and feeders to a climate-controlled area.
- Ensure Ventilation: Open all valves and loosen lids to allow air circulation in the pipes.
What to Do During a Power Outage
In the event of a power loss:
- Turn off electrical equipment to prevent surges when power is restored.
- Open filter air bleed valves to release trapped air.
- Remove drain plugs from pumps, filters, and heaters to clear standing water.
- Insulate equipment with blankets, heat strips, or insulation.
Chemical Safety
Chemicals such as liquid chlorine and acid can freeze, damaging equipment:
- Drain chemical tubing and store pumps in a warm area.
- Protect chlorine feeders by draining all water or insulating with heat strips or blankets.
For extended freezing weather, it’s always wise to seek professional advice.
